School of Dragons is most likely the closest we can get to ‘being in’ the world of HTTYD.
I originally came across School of Dragons (which I’ll reference as SoD from here on out) on YouTube and, eventually, once my family got a computer that could handle it, started playing it. However, my experience was cut short when they did an update that out-dated our computer. It was a couple of years before I could return to the game, having once again acquired a slightly newer PC, and continue playing.
In the time I’ve been playing SoD, I’ve enjoyed it a fair bit, despite feeling that it’s lacking in some places. I do enjoy being able to ‘have’ dragons of my own and also having my own hut on New Berk and on Dragons' Edge is nice. It’s a sweet concept, which I’d like to see them improve on as, at the time of writing, there’s not much reason to go into your hut other than to put in a new decoration. (Maybe it would be cool if they made a trunk or something in there that could act as an inventory storage or something so you don’t have to ‘carry’ all your weapons and clothes with you in your rucksack/satchel…)
My one big issue with the dragons though is a new set of animations they added during one of the
Dreadfall events. The dragons now have a ‘super happy’ animation, a ‘content’ animation and a ‘sad’
animation. While I don’t mind the ‘content’ and ‘sad’ animations (though I don’t like seeing my dragons sad, so I do everything I can to keep their happiness up), the ‘super happy’ animation is… frankly, disturbing in some dragons (Gronckles and Groncicles particularly…). I was hoping it was just a thing for that event and then the dragons would go back to normal… Unfortunately I was wrong… (If you like the animations, that’s fine. This is just my own personal opinion. ^-^)
The game itself is a fair bit of fun; so long as you have quests to go on. Once they run out or you’re waiting for your gems to build up to get another expansion (I’m a ‘free’ player, not a member), it can get a little boring. The events sort of add something, but I tend to stop trying for the prizes fairly quickly as I just don’t have the time to play for hours just to inch my way forward. I appreciate all the work the developers put into trying to make the game fun, but I do wish they’d focus on creating new general quests and/or expansions rather than the annual events that they keep doing.
My favourite mini game is probably Dragon Tactics. Prior to tactics, it would have been Thunder Run Racing, but… it’s just so-o difficult for me to even get into Thunder Run that I tend to avoid it. Not to mention, every time I try to do a multi-player race, it glitches out and I have to restart the game…
I also enjoy the farm, but…, again, it’s another area in SoD that could use a little extra help. My favourite animals in the farm, so far, are the bunnies. They’re so-o cute!
All-in-all, it’s a pleasant game to play. If you also play the game, what’s your favourite part? Also, do you have any preferred dragons? If you’d like to let me know, contact me. ^-^
Don’t forget to drop by the Downloads page as I’ve created a little printable set of stationery that may aid you. ^-^ One item is a dragons’ list, so you can write down your dragons in the order that you get them. (My own list, which inspired me to create these for you, has my dragons’ species, name, gender and day that I adopted them.) The other two are some themed note paper sheets and a ‘Viking Details’ sheet for you to write down all your SoD info on (please be sure to keep your filled out sheet somewhere safe).
Until next time, keep enjoying your fan side of life!
