Haikyuu was one of the first dubbed anime that I watched (after Royal Tutor Heine and Free). At first I was a little taken aback by it as it was quite different to any other series I’d watched up until that point (factoring in both anime and western cartoons). However, it quickly caught (and kept) my attention.
(Just a side note, I have watched the OVAs, the Riku vs Kuu episodes and season 4 in sub so I am familiar with both the English and Japanese versions. Though, I think due to watching it in dub originally, I slightly prefer the dub versions over the sub. I was so sad when I found out that ‘Ginger’ and ‘Man-bun’ were English only nicknames! *Sighs* Mr. Wald strikes again with stellar voice acting!)
As I’m sure all my fellow (and ‘senpai’ ~ more experienced) fans of Haikyu will agree, it’s been a journey with these crows that we’ve all grown to love so much. I’m looking forward to the last season with Karasuno versus Nekoma! (I haven’t read the manga yet, so I don’t know how everything plays out. I’ve literally just gotten my first copy of the Haikyuu manga – volume 2. ^-^) Particularly looking forward to seeing more of Nekoma. As much as I love the Karasuno crew… Nekoma’s either neck-and-neck or, probably, slightly ahead of Karasuno as my ‘favourite’ team…
In regards to characters in general, Haikyuu’s got some good ones. There isn’t any that I totally dislike of the main cast and recurring characters. However, I’m not keen on the Nohebi team… They weren’t as bad as Hanamiya’s team in Kuroko no Basuke (I hope I never find a team worse than that in a sports anime…), but they were edging on being ‘complete’ bad guys as far as I’m concerned…
In regards to moments that stood out for me from the series…
Hinata discovering he’s going to be on the same team as the guy he wants to beat… That was a surprise to me!
The barbeque in season 2… That was fun. ^-^
Tsukki’s ‘special personal’ moment in season 3 against Shiratorizawa. (I was so-o happy for him!\^-^/)
Also, Tsukki’s ‘babysitting’ Kageyama and Hinata in Tokyo when he was made to go out with them to make sure they got back safely.
So, yeah. Haikyuu, a fun and enjoyable sports series about volleyball (which, I just recently learnt, is what ‘haikyu’ means…). ^-^ If you’d like to see some interesting Haikyuu reaction videos, I recommend watching Victoria Garrick’s on YouTube. I enjoyed watching some of those and it’s interesting to hear a volleyball player’s take on the show.
Favourites:
• Character: Tsukishima.
• Episode: S02E07. (Gotta love Tsukki’s training session with Kuroo and Bokuto. XD)
Recommendation Rating:
07/10.
