Fan Side Musings – Cells at Work

Why can’t learning be this fun all the time?! Before watching Cells at Work, I didn’t even know I had cells that specifically handled parasites! Despite there being plenty of poetic license with this series, it is still very educational. I’ve had an interest in health long before Cells at Work came on the scene, but this series really adds ‘fuel’ to that ‘fire’; to do my best to be healthy so that I can help my cells do their best. I’ve only watched the ‘regular’ Cells at Work; Cells at Work Code Black looks a little too depressing for me… (I would only recommend watching Code Black if you need to shock yourself into living a better lifestyle…)

The characters in this series quickly endeared themselves to me; particularly White Blood Cell. He’s just so sweet! I also appreciate how dedicated he is to his job and how helpful he tries to be to the other cells when he doesn’t have to eliminate antigens from the body.

Some other characters that I’m fond of are: Red Blood Cell, Killer T, White Blood Cell’s friends, B Cell, NK and the Nyu-Nyus (they are so cute!). Though… even though he’s not one of my ‘favourites’, Dendritic Cell is quite sweet and… I love how they depicted his ‘activating’ the other cells. XD I feel sorry for the other cells, but… it does get the job done. ^-^ The Macrophages are another interesting group; looking so sweet and then those giant weapons…

The villains were also done really well. Particularly Cancer. My goodness… he pulls at the heart strings, but… you know you can’t side with him. Like White Blood Cell, you know he has to be eradicated from the body. (His story gives me motivation to keep myself healthy so that I lessen the chances of my cells being stressed out/fatigued, so they won’t make mistakes, thus stopping cancer from even forming in the first place.)

When I discovered Cells at Work, season 1 was already out in English, but season 2 wasn’t. So I got to hear it in both English and Japanese. Most of the voices ‘crossed over’ nicely; I think Red Blood Cell’s voice actresses matched very well. Others had differences in the different languages, but it still worked. White Blood Cell’s voice, for instance, is fairly different in the two languages, but it works well.

There is one character whose voice really appeals to me more in Japanese than in English, though, and that’s Killer T. I really like how he sounds in Japanese over his English voice. (I don’t mean to take anything away from his English actor by saying this; I appreciate his work as Killer T and some other characters in other series. I just happen to like Killer T’s Japanese voice a little more.) I feel that you really get that ‘tsundere’ (prickly outside, marshmallow inside type character) effect with the Japanese voice. Though… while we’re talking about Killer T… am I the only one who thinks he’s got nice eyes? If you’re not sure, go look at the special episode ‘Kaze Shoukougun’ (Common cold), the scene where he’s opening the box. We get a close up of his eyes there and that’s where I first really noticed them.

One thing that did stand out to me, was how they even dubbed the intro songs! I thought that was a nice touch. Also, did you notice that S01E09 had a different intro song? Instead of just White Blood Cell and Red Blood Cell, the main singers were Killer T and Macrophage! I really like it when series throw these little unexpected surprises at us every now and again. ^-^

In conclusion, I really enjoyed watching this fun and educational series. I wish there were more series like this on other subjects, but I’m glad that we at least got this one. ^-^ Hopefully there’ll be more seasons of Cells at Work in the future and maybe even spin-off series based on the other spin-off manga.
