SK8 The Infinity was one of those ‘start-and-can’t-stop’ series, which I love! As soon as a series has you wanting to watch more and more in quick succession, it’s a winner in my opinion. I only started watching SK8 after it had finished airing, so I could just keep watching one episode after the other. I’ve also watched both the sub and dub versions and, in regards to one specific character, I have a little to say. (Can you guess who that might be?)
There’s so much I really like about this series. The bright colours, the alter-egos/costumes, the bouncy intro and, of course, a wonderful cast of characters. When I first started watching the series, I decided to write down who I took an initial liking to based on their first impressions and appearances. For me, this ended up being Cherry and Langa. For the most part, these two are still in my top five, but… they’ve got a little company and competition now.
Reki and Langa ‘vie’ for their spaces (roughly third and fourth place). They’re both really sweet guys. I love Reki’s creativity and how he kind of acts like a ‘big brother’ to those around him. (I think I probably do the same – older sibs are going to treat anyone ‘younger’ or less experienced like their younger sibs… or is that just me and, maybe, Reki?) As for Langa… his innocence and genuineness is really sweet.
‘Vying’ for first place, we have Cherry and Adam.
Okay. Hold on. I know a lot of other people really don’t like Adam, but hear me out. Let me get one thing straight: I do not like how he treated Reki in either of their beefs; let alone how he, literally, decked Cherry in their beef. He has a horrible side and a creepy side, but… (*sighs*) there’s something about him that does draw me to him. (Which, I’ll be honest, does worry me sometimes…) I think it’s his flamboyancy and his skill on a skateboard that gets my attention… Let’s face it. The man knows how to skate and put on a show.
Anyway, moving on. Cherry. While dear sweet Cherry does tend to get out shone by Adam every now and again, I always come back to him as he’s just a much ‘safer’ character. Though, he’s actually ‘similar’ to Adam if you think about it. Adam has to put on a façade when he’s in public and so does Cherry. The man won’t even admit he prefers Italian cuisine over Japanese to keep up his ‘image’! So… yeah. Despite all this, I’m still very fond of this sophisticated skater.
In the uncontested fifth place, we have Miya! Kid’s got an attitude (some may say he’s ‘catty’ ~ yes, pun intended), but… I love seeing his caring side for Reki and the others.
As for the other members of the main cast, I’m fond of them, but… not as fond as my top five. Joe, would be higher up if he weren’t such a ladies’ man. (In all honesty, he would probably take Cherry’s place or at least turn the competition for first into a three-way competition!) His caring for the younger guys is so sweet and I share his interest in cooking, but… that flirting… (*Sighs*) Shadow… yikes. I’m glad he turned out to be a good guy and he’s super sweet, but… yeah. (Is the main thread in this series, regarding the adults at least, that they need to be more honest with themselves and/or the world around them? Just a thought.) Finally, Tadashi/Snake. He’s really awesome. Given what he has to work with, I’m pretty impressed with him. His loyalty shines through and all he wants to do is to help Adam. Not to mention, he’s a very skilled skater in his own right. Perhaps the only reason he isn’t higher up on my favourites list is because we didn’t really get to know much more about him in this season.
I also really liked some members of the support cast. Reki and Langa’s moms and Inspector Kamata were brilliant! (We did not get to see enough of Inspector Kamata! She’s awesome! Before I started to like Adam as a character, I totally agreed with her reaction to him in episode 6.) Manager Oka and Sketchy were also a great part of the cast.
Something that stood out to me as an interesting phenomenon, having watched both the sub and dub
versions of the series, was my perception of Adam in the two languages. In Japanese, I see him as being more ‘elegant’ and ‘princely’ (when he’s not being crazy). In English, though,… he has a more ‘eccentric’ vibe to him in general; just different levels of ‘eccentric’. I also really appreciated his English actor’s take on some of the lines; I know one was a joke that the director liked, so I’m uncertain how many are ‘improv’ and how many are from the translated script. Either way, I feel he added something to the character which I thoroughly enjoyed seeing. Unfortunately, the other characters didn’t get the same ‘impact’ between the two languages. However, I enjoy watching both versions and appreciate the hard work of both sets of cast and crew.
I really hope they do a second season so we can have more time to spend with these intriguing characters and let us get to know them even more. I look forward to seeing if or how they grow and what adventures await them next.
Favourites:
• Character: Cherry Blossom/Kaoru.
• Episode: Season 1 Episode 6 ~ The beach episode. (I really like ‘chill’ episodes where it’s kind of like you’re getting to hang out with the characters and just enjoy their company rather than focusing on the main action of the story arc. Also… Miya’s sabotage of Joe’s flirting… Priceless! XD)
Recommendation Rating:
8/10.
