Hardly anyone really ‘enjoys’ doing chores. Some chores are more tolerable than others, but they can still be a drag. Though… could there be a way to make chores more enjoyable using our favourite stories?
This post idea came to mind while I was working hard, out in our garden a while ago. There was a fairly large section that we hadn’t taken the best care of and it had turned into a veritable jungle. The whole family was going out basically daily to keep hacking it back and reclaiming that part of the yard. While I was trying to clear one particular area, the thought occurred to me that one of the characters I’m fond of is keen on gardening: Yuzuriha-senpai from Starmyu. Just the thought of gardening with him (and maybe with Ageha, Hachiya and the rest of Team Yuzuriha too) was enough to change my perspective on the situation from drudgery to mildly pleasant. Picturing the scene in my head aided as well; having him and the others there as silent company. This then got me thinking about any of my other chores that I have to do. What could I ‘connect’ to them from the stories I enjoy that would help make the chores more ‘fun’?
Just by ‘connecting’ a character or story to something can make it less of a ‘problem’ to me. Naturally, I have to be intentional about this to begin with; remembering the positive connection and then doing the chore.
One example that I’ve got is in relation to doing the laundry. Its connection is from Touken Ranbu
Hanamaru, where, in S01E02, we see the assigning of duties and one of those is laundry. Kasen is usually on laundry duty in the series and, with him being one of my favourites, it made it easier to do the laundry. Now, I don’t have to deliberately think of Kasen, but while I’m busy doing the chore, he may come to mind. ^-^
Here’s a list of chores and potential story connections:
• Dusting, vacuuming, sweeping – Touken Ranbu Hanamaru Cleaning Duty.
• Washing dishes – Touken Ranbu Hanamaru Shokudaikiri ~ S02E10 he comments on getting
Nakigitsune’s dishes for him later (at least in the English version).
• Washing/Caring for your vehicle – Touken Ranbu Hanamaru Horse Duty. (My thinking here is that
horses are a mode of transport on the battlefield and you need to keep them clean and cared for so they
can be ridden well.)
• Gardening – Yuzuriha-senpai from Starmyu; Will Sprout from Helios Rising Heroes; Shirayuki from
Akagami no Shirayukihime; Obi from Akagami no Shirayukihime.
• Laundry – Touken Ranbu Hanamaru Laundry Duty.
I don’t know if this’ll help you in any way, but I hope that, maybe, this has inspired you to try to find ways to make your chores less unpleasant and more ‘fun’.
